Ive been a bit busy!
« on: 25, August, 2010, 09:31:13 PM »
Hi all, not been on here for a long while but I thought Id pop in.

Ive been a bit buggered lately after a nasty spill back in March.

On my way to work my R1 project bike which I had just completed spat me off at around 30-35mph.

It threw me off in front of an oncoming Transit van, which luckily managed to stop in time.

Unfortunately my bike did`nt and some how managed to almost chop my right leg off.

I broke both right Tibia and Fibula, my right thumb, and dislocated my left ankle.

I lost 5 pints of claret but remained conscious throughout.

The pain was pretty awful I must admit.

Since then Ive been through a couple of ops and had a Taylor Spatial Frame fitted.

This frame comprises a scaffold of 3 tiers, with adjustable struts connecting the tiers and 13 insertions in my leg.

I lost approx 42mm of bone length which I have had to try and grow back with some success.

I am now waiting for a bone graft operation.

The whole incident has cost me dearly both emotionally, and physically.

I just wanted to share with you, how very close to losing everything we all are when we get on our bikes.

Im not trying to scare anyone but the reality of my situation hits home every time I wake up.

I nearly died in an instant, and dragged everyone close to me through my resulting turmoil.

Was that ride to work worth it?

No.

Was it wise for me to not listen to wiser people than me.

No.

I was a biker, I will never be again.

I owe it to all those who care about me, and all those that helped me to never test their care again.

I am fortunate enough to share my experience, and understand vividly how people are affected when it all goes wrong.

Please be careful, wear the right gear, and make a balanced choice before you set off.

Is that ride really necessary?

Thanks for reading.

Alex

Very sorry to hear about your spill and that you were injured so badly.  Sorry it means you won't be riding again.

For me however I don't think "is that ride really necessary?" as I ride because I enjoy the riding.  I do always wear the right gear - are you saying that because you were not?

I hope the next op goes well - good luck.

hi Alex,
sorry to hear about your experience.  you would never think these things happens until they happen, i only know too well how horrible it must have felt.
i completely understand why you dont want to ride again, and the advice you are giving to your fellow bikers.  its a choice we make every single day with every single ride and its sensible to ask ourselves if we are making the right one.
for me its still the right one and wish nothing as remotely serious like you happens to me, as i too would consider hanging the helmet for good.
good luck to you and to everyone else that is going through that amount of pain, i know when you're there the pain is the only thing you can think of.  but it will get better, slowly.
best wishes.

and yes, do you know why the bike spat you off?
compare the meeerkat

Blinking heck Fizz, Isn't this your third big spill?  Maybe you are right to quit whilst ahead.
People will forget what you have said and they will forget what you have done--but they will never forget the way you made them feel.

Hello again all,

just to answer a few points that have come up in your replies.

The bike caught some diesel, I always wear my leathers, and Im not anti bike by any means.

Im just trying to let you all know how I feel.

Ive lost a couple of friends recently and that didnt stop me riding, I dont expect this thread to stop you riding, but the simple truth is, if you dont stop riding on the road, then someone or something else will stop you.

We are all a heart beat away from changing everything, and when I look at the state of the roads today there are a lot of heartbeats out there.

I didnt realise that until it happened, neither did my two friends...... their families and mine did however, thats the annoying thing for me.....

I got blinkered by the "Biker" ethos too, Im not ashamed to admit it either, but the fact of the matter is this, biking is not safe enough on the roads we have.

All we do when we get on a bike is mitigate the damage we`re going to cause when it goes wrong.

Thats why we wear leathers, protection, and helmets, and we think thats gonna save us....... its not folks!

The only thing that will reduce the likelyhood of anything happening is to reduce the risks.

Is there an alternative to having a pitched battle with millions of pre-occupied drivers, and their immeasureable lack of vision?

Of course there is........ a track!

The chances of damage are vastly reduced and the chances of being knocked of by some half blind, dopehead, skinning another toke are practically nil.

Road bikes are lethal in the right hands too thats all Im saying.

Be lucky

Alex

Life is very very fragile, but even if we devote ourselves to making it risk free, some poor sod gets cancer or finds out they were born with a heart defect etc.

Say thank you to God, or whatever, or just say 'thank you', if you make it to bed time.
Say thank you to God, or whatever, or just say 'thank you', when you find yourself awake in the morning.
Say thank you to God, or whatever, or just say 'thank you', for friends, family (all who suffer pain, sickness and loss in their own lives)
Say thank you to God, or whatever, or just say 'thank you', every time you get off your bike (in a controlled manner :-)  )
Say thank you to God, or whatever, or just say 'thank you', every time it isn't so controlled, but you're still around to tell the tale.

If you've ridden for a year or two, like me, you've probably lost count of the close calls. I have been very lucky. I am stupid enough to take that luck for granted now and then, but most of the time I know.

Alex, you have my best wishes, and I am grateful for your concern and compassionate reminder of the fragility of my body.

My Dad signed the HP papers as guarrantor for my first bike when I was 17. At the time, you could ride from the bike shop, with no training, on a 250cc bike, capable of 100mph. I lost a couple of my friends in those first years. He thought I'd be one of them.

Thirty years on, I still love that on bike feeling. I say 'thank you' to my bike every time I get off it. I say sorry to it when I notice how grubby it looks and I know I've been neglecting it again.

There will always be casualties. The roads are busy and dangerous. So take care, but remember to enjoy life and remember to say 'Thank you'.

The track doesn't appear to too safe either. I was saddened to hear about the death of Tomizawa.
I watched the accident on t.v. and thought "That looks bad." Early commentary reports suggested that he had sufferred only bruising, and was comfortable.

Nineteen-year-old Japanese Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa has died after a   crash during Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix, the second death in the   sport in two events.
Rossi, who suffered a broken leg in an accident before the Italian Grand   Prix in June, led riders in a tribute to another dead Japanese   colleague Daijiro Kato earlier in the week in a ceremony at Misano.

Take care y'all, and remember, it's supposed to be fun.
