'Accident' or 'Incident'
« on: 14, July, 2009, 09:03:56 AM »
This post has been driven from the ‘Burger Debate’. I have not watched the video nor do I wish to and my comments are generalised.

I have my opinions, which don’t often sit well with Burger but he knows I do not believe in ‘Accidents’.

Cause, Fault, Rectification. How many time have you heard ‘Accident caused by ice’ Bullshit. It should read ‘Accident caused by pricks who did not realise that the ice that they had scrapped from their windscreen this morning could have formed on the road surface’ or ‘I always do 70mph on that stretch of road’.

In terms of road use I have tried to teach the following especially on manoeuvres such as overtakes in a moving line of traffic.

Keep a reasonable distance from the vehicles in front.
Move to the right hand side of your lane to get a good view.
Hold a constant speed and be in the correct gear to pass when the opportunity arises and NEVER accelerate towards an obstacle.
Decide on each vehicle overtake on its own merit. (ie long straight road, I can pass two vehicles) if the road is still clear decide on the third pass etc etc.

It does not slow you down, it means you have made a calculated decision and the pass is no longer on your mind as a priority and you are more focused on what is happening around you.

For me it is ‘Incident’ not ‘Accident’

FAULT- I hit a car
CAUSE- I didn’t anticipate
RECTIFICATION – Anticipate
PS. Its good to be back lol.

post of the year?

There is no such thing as an accident. That's why they now call them road traffic collisions.

All accidents could have been avoided, but some are harder to avoid than others!

An accident is an incident for which no cause that could be reasonably expected can be determined. Therefore all RTCs are incidents as there is always a reason.
Road Traffic Collision became the adopted phrase after a smart arsed lawyer tried to get his client off the hook claiming that if the police called it an accident then why were charges being brought against his client. The judge didn't agree with the lawyers argument but warned on the continued use of the word accident should anyone try that argument again.

There are many reasons for an accident both on and off the road. It could be an accident that you pissed on a two tone car and got in trouble for it. But if you remember that you had knoced back 10 pints then maybe this was an incident of choice and not an accident as you try to tell the judge  ;D

I think if you went for a ride you would come up with many reasons why if X happened now you would have an accident. You have not planned for them to happen but the only way to be 100% safe of them not happening is to sit at home and sell your bike. And let me tell you, that idea is SH1T!!!
Hope you are making jokes and have a smile on your face my Danish diplomatic friend. Long may your memory live!

So, what would you call my scenario, accident or incident;

Pulled away from lights, accelerating, suddenly, uninsured, Polish cnut in van coming towards me on other side of road decides he wants to turn right, across me, hitting me head on, sending me somersaulting right over the top of the van, sliding 30 yards down road, with my bike buried in his near side wing.

Now, what rectication can you apply to my situation;

FAULT              - Car hit me
CAUSE              - Last second change of direction by car, without any thought for anyone else, namely me
RECTICATION - ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Sounds like a load of moosepiss!!!!!

Accidents do happen!!

errr well, I hate to say it, but I have to agree with my old man. Accidents dont happen. The word accident would imply no one was at fault.

Your incident John was the cause of the Polish Driver. is actions were no accident, they were a set of executed actions which resulted in you hitting him.

Yeah, get your point Rich. He didn't 'accidentally' turn, he obviously did it on purpose without any thought

So, that was the 'incident' caused by lack of care on his part

Got wrong end of stick. Get it now :)

I would agree, it seems strange that although I have been riding bikes in all shapes or forms for something like 45 years, it is maily in recent years that I have been involved in "incidents!" This I feel id down to change in attitudes on the road, lack of skills and too many in vehicle distractions!
However, as a biker I have seen many strange things happen on the roads over the years, but I am amazed at the new bizarre things drivers can come up with.
Having said that, extra and continued training pays off, as it has always minimized the damage done both to myself and to some extent my bike on the few incidents when contact has been made, but I have lost count of those I have managed to avoid! lol
You think you have seen it all, then some twat comes up with something new >:(
