Hi, please forgive the intrusion but this is Ian's partner Sue, not the man himself.

It seemed right to let you know that Ian had a stroke in the early hours of Saturday morning, 28 February.  For once I am truly thankful for my insomnia as he was rushed to hospital, where he is expected to remain for at least 2 weeks, almost immediately.

Fortunately the damage doesn't seem to be too great with mainly his short term memory and speech centre being affected although he is, of course, still pretty poorly.  I am awaiting tests results and decisions from the doctors.  I will pop back to advise you of his long term prognosis once I know what it is myself.

He's doing fantastically well - even according to the ward sister that I spoke to about an hour and a half ago.  No way of telling how the process will go but we are all cautiously optimistic about a near/full recovery.  He's already looking after his own personal hygeine, feeding himself asking for things to be brought in.  Memory is hazy and finding the specific words he wants to use is very difficult sometimes, especially as he gets more tired as the day progresses.

Still, all in all the news is all good and positive and that'll do for me, for now.

Thanks to everyone for all your care, concern, kind messages and good wishes.  Not that I expected anything less from you lot, of course!!!

Sue x

Prognosis is very good for stoke victims especially if it is diagnosed within a certain time. He's got you to thank for that Sue.  Just make sure he gets all the follow up appointments and physio etc when he's discharged from hospital.  Love to you both xx

Sue,

Sorry only just seen this.

So sorry to hear of Ian's illness.  Please let us know if we can do anything to help.

Prayers and thoughts with both of you.

Give Ian a big hug and tell him he should have learned to stay OUT of hospitals. Which one is he in BTW?

Oh yeah, that would be terrible indeed!

Don't worry, you only had to see his face and the ghastly shade of white he went when I casually mentioned that I might as well sell the bike whilst he was in hospital to know he'll NEVER forget he's a biker.

Naughty girl Sue. '<img'>

I replied on LB, but I'll say here I'll never forget your grit, forbearance and "terrifying aspect" after the Cornwall debacle.  Well done this time getting him sorted so soon, it will have helped tremendously.

Looking forward to seeing you both again. '<img'>

Sue informed me this morning as follows:

"Ian is doing really, really well so they have moved him further down the ward away from the nurses' station, which is a great move.  They have told him that there is a possibility that he will be transferred to Whipps (Cross) today."

Sue or I will keep you posted on Ian's movements so that hospital visits can be planned. Visits are to be encouraged, they should help with his recovery.

There will probably be a limit to the number of visitors at any one time (where he is at the moment, there is a limit of two visitors per bed) so there will need to be an element of coordination between two different forums (here and LB, where Ian also has many friends) and with Sue. Not sure what the best way is of going about that but the simplest solution seems to be if people post the time and date here after checking LB aren't planning to visit the same time and then clearing it with Sue by PM-ing her on Ian's forum account.

If contacting Sue, please bear in mind she is rushing around at the moment so contact with us may understandably not be her top priority, so you may not get an immediate response.

If this system doesn't work out I might be seeking a volunteer with time on their hands to coordinate things more effectively. Any better suggestions for doing this would be welcome.

Sue has also told me that if you wish to send "get well soon" cards, best to hold onto those for the time being until we know whether Ian is to be transferred to a different hospital.

I am posting a similar message on LB.

Ok all, here's the latest from Sue, some great news.

Before I give you that though please be aware that Ian is in:

Harvest B ward, bay 6, bed C, Queen's Hospital, Rom Valley Way, Romford, Essex RM7 0AG.

Visiting hours are 3pm to 5pm and 6pm to 7.30pm.

This from Sue:

"The really brilliant, excellent news is that Ian has progressed so well that they may well let him home early next week.  Aiming for Wednesday but could even be earlier.  I'm so excited, how good is that?  He was so improved again this evening, laughing, joking, remembering his pin number, asking for things to be brought in.  Almost unrecognisable from how he was just 5 days ago.  The ward sister said it's near impossible to give a long term prognosis because they are as surprised as me at how quicly he has progressed.  Trust Ian!  I think he will rather enjoy being told he was a bit of an enigma at a later date.

They probably won't transfer him from Queen's now so if anyone wants to visit there over the weekend or maybe Monday that should be ok.  I did note that there were more than 2 visitors around the beds in his new bay so I think we could possibly get away with, maybe, 4.  There is a half decent coffee shop in the lobby (???) of the hospital where people could wait and take turns if a few wanted to come together.

The rideout is a washout for this hospital as he's on the 4th floor with excellent double glazing.  I will contact Mr Rizla regarding this and ask if he thinks they could possibly come to our home instead.

Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm just on such a high I'm dizzy!"

'<img'>  '<img'>  '<img'>  '<img'>  '<img'>

Don't bother with the coordination thing I mentioned earlier, too complicated. Just turn up, I'm sure Ian will be delighted to see you and I'm sure it will also help Ian's recovery. Just bear in mind the limit on visitors and if everyone's sensible all should work out fine.

Eezy - thanks very much for letting us know.

In case Sue doesn't get on to read this - if you are talking to her please let her know we are thinking of her and Ian.

It's brilliant news - I suspect the quick recovery is a lot due to Sue getting him help so quickly!
