Going up to Cadwell this weekend I took a route I found a few years back, being fed up/bored with the usual motorway route.
I leave London via the M11 for a quick getaway from the smoke, past Cambridge onto the A14 for a short hop then onto the A10 towards Ely. This is quite a nice piece of road, reasonable speeds can be maintained and overtaking is no problem 'cos visibility is pretty good.
Carry on past Ely until you come to a place called Littleport, turn left off the roundabout onto the A1101, signposted Wisbech. This is where the real fun starts. A couple of long straights to get you in the mood, then the twisties start, some long flowing bends and some pretty tight ones, the road passes through some pretty villages and over some small rivers.
Through Wisbech, following the signs for Sleaford, still on the 1101, a fairly fast road, again good visibility for overtaking, eventually you join the A17, turning left for Sleaford. Follow this for a few miles, watch out for the cameras and the many lorries that use this stretch, eventually turn right off a roundabout onto the A16 towards Boston.
Long straight road, once through Boston follow the A153, signposted Horncastle, another favourite bit of road, it criss-crosses the fens, then there is a stretch of dead straight road for about 10 miles before some serious twisties start, and I mean serious!
Watch out for the famous Ostrich farm on this bit, when you arrive in Horncastle you should have a grin from ear to ear, just like I did on Friday.
Then turn round and come home the same way, just like I did on Sunday! (Try and fit in some racing at Cadwell inbetween.)
