3000 miles in 4 years?
« on: 22, April, 2008, 12:04:09 PM »
Hi all

I no longer have my SV650 and I am about to get a new bike, which on paper looks very promising. An SV1000S, 2004 model with 3000 miles on the clock. I rang the dealer, asked a few questions but one thing bothers me. The bike had 2 previous owners. It is HPI clear and the dealer offers 3 month warranty, but I am a bit sceptical about those 3000 miles after 2 owners and 4 years.

Does that sound genuine or am I too para?

what mileage is recorded on current MOT, and also on previous, should give u an indication of usage. My fazer only had 16k on it after 7 years, that is till i got it and since then have added a further 7k '<img'>
What bike dealer are you considering?

If your Fazer had 1 owner, then 16k sounds quite good I guess.

I'm going to check the bike out today so will note the service history logs and mot etc and will reply to that in a few hours. Thanks.

The dealer is Stamford Superbikes Ltd in Peterborough  ''

4 owners? wow! I dont think I would even consider it, but hope you had good luck with it.

the SV1s history...

Sep 04 - bike registered by 1st owner
Oct 04 - 1st service at 637 miles
Mar 05 - bike sold to 2nd owner
Sep 07 - 2nd service and MOT at 3031 miles

what do you think?

Hi Kat.  Some people on ride there bike occasionally.  You may find that the owner of th SV1000 only took it out on dry sunny Sunday afternoons.

I did just over 9000 miles in the year that I had my DT50MX (moped) when I was 16.  I'm sure there are guy on here that do much more.  Collin, Carrie???

I have two bikes to choose from: the one mentioned above and another SV1 with 11500 miles, one owner and six services in between.

I spoke to a friend of mine and he advised me against the first 3000 miles one because the first owner, having kept the bike for only half a year probably didn't run it in properly, may have revved it too much without a care. The second owner could have left it unridden for long periods of time. One service in 3 years? Too much speculation and too much risk.

As for the second bike however, the owner intended to keep the bike for long hence would give it much more TLC, running it in, keeping thorough FSH (dealer even told me what was done at each service), and riding it rather than letting it rust somewhere under a bridge  ':p'   Sorry for the pessimism.

So I recon the second 11500-miles SV1 it will be.

Mmm, cant wait!!! I'm going to see the new baby tomorrow!   '<img'>  '<img'>

I'd agree with you. Even if the bike isn't being run it'd still want regular servicing, so that bike hasn't been serviced enough. I'd definitely be looking for a bike with 'average' mileage on it, unless I'd known the previous owner. I've also been careful in the past to check how long a bike has been sitting with a dealer. I know it probably doesn't matter much, but I've only ever had problems with machinery (cars, bikes, and any thing else mechanical) when I don't use it very often.
is that thunder i can hear?

I think I agree as well, but I can also see the first owner as being a return to biking person, out of biking for say 15 years, had a decent bike before and hadn't realised how much engineering let alone bike engineering had moved on in that period of time, basicly he sh!t himself and got rid quickly, the second owner, no excuse, should have looked after it better, then again he could have changed the oil himself in his heated garage after another polish  ''  '<img'>
Big twins are a different breed of bike, you either love them or hate them, Mattp let me ride his SV1000 a couple of times and I loved it, which is one of the reasons why I now ride the TL1000R,
which ever bike you choose I hope you enjoy it  '<img'>
