« on: 27, March, 2008, 08:55:15 PM »
Tootling along a bit dozily a few mph over the limit yesterday (38 in a 30 - I know, I know) I noticed the flash of a speed camera in my mirror, swearing profusely I managed to execute a spectacular stoppie, before the end of the stripes. Very impressive though I say it myself.

Whaddaya reckon's going to happen?

If it's an old-style gatso, there's probably no film in it. I've luckily not yet been flashed by the new, smaller, digital version, so can't comment if it's one of those.

Slim chance there was film in the camera, but if there was then although the flash(es) travels at the speed of light (obviousely) to see it and then react to it means the evidence has already been captured. The two pictures and hence flashes are a fixed time apart and the is nothing you can do to stop the second picture from being taken. However if the distance travelled between the two pictures is less than distance that would be travelled at the upper speed threshold, somewhere between 44ft/s and 54ft/s then the ticket would be void. Assuming instantaneous braking reation to the emmission of the first flash, then at 38mph a deceleration of between 0.7G and 1.5G is required to a) get the terminal speed down to the speed limit or b) to get the average speed down to the speed limit. As human reaction time is generally no better than 0.2s you can multipy those theoretical numbers by 1.67 to show that it is not possible to beat a GATSO this way.

Oh can you tell I'm bored. ':p'

The only reason they would knick Wildcat for having her rear end in the air is so they could examine it a bit closer. ':p'

Carrie - You managed to get your rear, ahem, airborne before the 2nd flash?  Very impressive.  So your numberplate won't be readable on the 2nd photo then, no case to answer.  Too cool

I've got evidence of a Taekwondo man (5th degree black belt, same grade as me) who's reaction speed is 0.18 of a second.  I know what you're going to say, that an action takes 0.2 of a second and a reaction takes 0.5 of a second.  But I've got it on DVD, having recorded a Discovery channel thing.  Bloody impressive, because that generally translates into the guy being able to react to an attack faster than it is initiated at him, giving the impression that he knows what his opponent is going to do before the opponent actually does it.  I wonder what his emergency braking distances measure up at?

Theory number two - I braked so hard I almost got rear-ended, hence my number plate will be invisible due to the proximity of the vehicle behind.

Went past again yesterday, the camera's at a very odd angle more kind of aiming down than horizontally, it's possible my nifty Vespa topbox may have partially obscured the plate at that angle too - sadly the stoppie will have made it more visible.

Gotta live in hope, haven't I.

yeah................ obviously not seen the footage..

but if you are sparring constantly you know someone is going to move in such or such direction just by reaction to their body movements, they drop a shoulder, twist a certain way..  a quick fighter would clump them before they had even clenched their fist..

Hence proved time travel possible  ':p'

and course you can beat a gatso....  a big fugg off hammer or a burning tyre usually suffices...

Looks like I got away with it, which was lucky as I think those Limehouse Link ones are digital - I had an ominous looking envelope arrive yesterday which reminded me of this, but it was a red-light jumping ticket from when my friend borrowed my car. Dontcha just hate that.
