Changing my bike
« on: 13, September, 2007, 03:32:28 AM »
As I'm getting on a bit now and my knees, wrists and arse ain't quite as supple as they used to be I've decided to change my RR3 FireBlade for something a bit more comfortable and practical.

I'm looking at unfaired, upright, quick enough and should handle competently but not especially sportily (if that makes sense) and it needs to be physically large to suit my "big boned" build, ahem...

Budget is £4k and so far my shortlist is down to a CB1300 and possibly a 1200 Bandit, maybe even a Fazer, all the other "retros" are a bit too shonky for my liking. I'm not ready for a BMW nor a pipe and slippers just yet either '<img'>

I've been trawling through Biketrader and MCN looking for inspiration but I've not really come accross anything that floats my boat, anyone have any interesting or left-field suggestions ?

Hi John - good to see you back.

I have the perfect bike for you. It'll easily keep up with the big jap sports bikes (up to a legal speed at least!'<img'> but has a comfortable sit up position(i did a france trip last year with simone on the back) and is something slightly different.

Anyway - i put it up for sale... and for you, just cos i like ya, Ill knock £500 off the asking price.

Take a look at The best bike in the world

(well worth the slightly increased budget)

I have considered the superduke and its the bike I'd def buy if I didn't have to be sensible and practical but there are a couple of problems, I make it look like a toy when I sit on it, especially from behind and I need to be able to fit a top box and panniers plus I need a tank bag to carry my pooch around in ! '<img'>

Good suggestion though '<img'>

you can get decent luggage for it - cant remember which make of the top of my head - but was able to find full luggage system.

and lets face it, all you really need for the pooch is somewhere to attach the lead!

John - CB1300 looks boring, but I guess it down to how it rides and if you feel comfortable on it.  Bandit, yuck no, typical Suzuki build quality.  Fazer, hmm, yummy.  But try everything.  My 2004 R1 is comfortable to me.  However, why not also entertain a VFR800?  I had one for a fortnight and it handled very well.  And with Derek Guyver's servicing prices , you don't need to be scared of the dreaded valve clearance service at 16k miles.
Aceman -  I have a very healthy fear of pain!

I'm probably going to have to adopt a new identity here as my ex-missus is becoming increasingly spiteful and vindictive...

I shall return under a different name, hopefully something slightly more imaginative and i'll operate mysteriously and incognito for a bit until it blows over '<img'>

Right on pretty much all counts, i was being far too sensible which is why i needed a bit of inspiration from you chaps and now i have it in the shape of a fazer, sure it will corrode and probably bits will fall off but it ticks all my boxes '<img'>

I've ridden a VFR800 and though it was a competent bike it just seemed a little too revvy and gutless for my liking, thats just mho, i'm not slagging the bike off, its just not for me.

Prob is i have to be a bit sensible and face the fact that I just cant do sportsbikes anymore, i never found my fireblade comfortable even with lower pegs and higher bars, i was seduced by the image and the power but i could never ride it to its true potential because of my knackered wrists, knees, neck, back, moan, whine, etc...

John - why do you want it unfaired?  Just wondering because from everything else you say I would have thought a second hand Sprint would suit you.  There are a few on flea bay - some even have the luggage!

Plus side:

its quicker than an 02 R1, 929 blade, ZX10r and a mille up to about the point of where you need a fairing and we all blow past it '<img'>  It sounds the dogs, nothing else touches it style wise not even the KTM (and I think thats horny ) , it back fires and scares yardies.

Down Side,

ITs a triumph!!!!, it wont start after 2 days, it will pit and rust, it will chip and it will almost certainly get pinched from any motorcycle parking bay within the M25, parts are expensive and modern triumph labour is crap and over priced.

Listen to it hear,

Trumpet tripple
