Forum question

Hey guys... I know I haven't been around for too much... and did spend more time on LB then here but frankly this was my very first biking forum, and you guys took me on my very first rideout so I would like to give a little:):) and catch up...

I was thinking... don't you think the forum looks a bit old and outdated?? I am not sure what the guys here use... some kind of forum specific software or is it all coded? I am sure some of the people registered work in the IT field, maybe design etc...

I would gladly imput all I can, I am working in flash and know my way around it, same with adobe photoshop and illustrator. Anyone else that knows their way around it and would love to help?

Was just wondering if might be time to Jazz It Up a little bit??

What do you think? ':p'

The less jazz the better IMHO.  Content is the key.  Look at the newsgroup uk.rec.motorcycles - upwards of 1000 posts a day *all in plain text*.

I think there is a bandwidth issue here as well.
With the amount of archived messages there would be an enormous drain on the system.

havent you noticed how slow the LB website runs? Also, bear in mind other stuff, such as, LB is run as a business... for example, look how much an LB sticker costs... £1.25... each!

TLB isnt run as a business. No one is paid to admin/mod.

Bang on trouty and long may we keep it this way! I'd hate it if we turned in to a sell out advert site like others have. I respect the fact that Trouty and others give their time not to make a profit from us members but to supply a great service.

Maybe the fact that we are interested only in the biking and not what is selling on E-bay, biketrader, etc is what keeps a core people here?

Please remember one thing Drei, this is a bike site for people to ride and meet each other face to face. We don't have the member numbers of other sites but at the same time look at the number of people who have posted 50+ times on this site and then at the numbers for other sites. You may be shocked to find out the VERY high number of people who don't post at all on these sites. Could these be facts to get up the numbers? I don't know but at the same time I could not give a flying!

We are simple people here. We ride, drink and laugh as friends. IMO, thats all we need and I have no interest in being part of a site that looks to copy (this does not only need to be layout but could be name?) over being itself '<img'>

Well Mattp to a degree you are very right, and I agree with you that a forum should be free to users, but don't forget a webmaster or forum owner has his overheads to cover, i.e. he/she will have to pay for the internet provider where the forum software and database (all the recorded posts / members details etc etc) are hosted. These unfortunately aren't free and I don't know about Troutslayer, he might be rich beyond belief, but I am certainly not and when I pay for a non returnable monthly fee of £35 I know I am already at a loss for providing a service that is done out of "love" to my members. Internet domain names such as TheLondonBikers.com or XT660.com also cost to obtain, the forum software people (in my case vBulletin which is quite sophisticate), charges you a yearly fee to be able to use their support and donwload free updates to clear bugs etc... so there is quite a bit of money involved in this venture.

Hence the need for sponsors such as eBay, eBike, Google Ads, FireFox, Picasa and other which are only meant to help you support your expenditures. You watch tv you see ads, you listen to the radio and again you hear ads. Unfortunately whoever is providing you with these free services has to find means of remuneration to be able to continue providing those services.

like TLB as is, surely there is no issue?  I suppose if anythin changes he'd soon let us know.
