Don't worry, I went to a talk by Andy Ibbott the other week, and I told him that he was contradicting himself when he said at the start that coming off the power makes the bike go straight on, then saying that putting the power on makes the bike stand up!!! I guess he was talking about different circumstances, but the talk was generalised too much to get the point across properly so he should have been more careful how he said it.
Applying throttle makes the bike stand up. Coming off the power makes the bike run wide. I am very surprised that Andy didn't re-explain it to you, that's his job and he is an excellent trainer too.

when you lean a long way and put power through the small contact patch
I HATE to contradict you in any way Matt, and what else you said was spot on, but as I understood it, once you are over the contact patch actually gets bigger? Perhaps it was just a poor choice of words? What you then said about the balance and weight was better.
'>
Feel free to contradict me any time you like
'>
The sentence shouldnt really have linked the lean and the size of the contact patch... what I was getting at is when you lean the force becomes a shearing (ie sideways) force which the contact patch cant hold because a) its small (like it always is on a motorcycle tyre) and b) shell grip is rubbish when the force is applied sideways rather than down onto it.

That's better Matt. Like I said, not really contradicting, just thought you could have put it better, and you have.
Mikey, the problem was it was just a couple of hours seminar that he had come to do for our IAM group, for free, and he was trying to fit a lot in to a small time. My beef was that he should've kept it simple and perhaps just told us more about the days and what they do, which is basically what he wanted to do anyway. He didn't really have time to do the concepts justice. I do want to go on one of his courses and get the real deal at some point.

Si, I did level 1 last month and am doing level 2&3 on Wednesday and Thursday. He is really a VERY engaging guy and knows his stuff.
I honestly walked away at the end of the day having learnt more about how to ride a bike and it has helped me since!

Matt, excellent information about grip, i think it will help him a lot coming to terms with it, as he's still asking himself how has it happened...

Mate, very sorry to hear of your off and subsequent pain. 1500 sheets should sort you some way to getting back on to two wheels and at least your no-claims will still be intact...
Hopefuly see you out and about sometime soon.

Lee, no need for IAM to help the lad get better. Just needs to have a little luck as even a teacher of IAM can crash.
Mate, just get better and give us a bell if you need anything

Crash once, that might be unlucky. Crash twice, then IAM training is a good idea. Crash three times and you need to stop, and then completely change your riding attitude.
This isnt aimed at Burger, but Im of the school of thought that says all accidents are your fault. There are so few accidents (dont bother with telling me stories, I know they do exist) where there is nothing that could have been done, or an escape route couldnt have been planned. Even if 'the other guy' was entirely in the wrong, you should have been elsewhere by the time it happened.
Been there - as a testosterone filled yoof, I crashed. Lots. And somehow it was always the other guy's fault....
Then a shock to the system made me change everything about my attitude to riding.
