Another 'which bike' thread
« on: 12, April, 2007, 02:26:52 PM »
Hi there TLB peeps.

I dont post here often, coz I'm pretty much out of the biking loop right now (Unless Andyblade lends me one of his!'<img'>

The time has come where I can get myself a new bike for the summer! WOooooo '<img'>

I'd really like some advice on the best bike to suit me and my budget.

My last bike was a '92 ZXR 750. And I loved it.  Everything about it was awesome.

My budget is between 1500-2000 quid.  Ideally I'd spend around 1800, but MIGHT step to 2 grand for the right bike.

I like to go fast, I like race style bikes, I like getting my knee down.  Basically.....what is the best bike for the money?

P.S. Im only 5'8" and around 10 stone if that makes any difference!

Thanks.

Crow.

I'd say Get A YAMAHA YZF-R1 because there faster, better, and look good ,but i suppose thats just me being biased!!!. '<img'>

But I'd say Stretch to £2800 and i give you a good deal on a Yamaha R1 2000 model '<img'>

Dont really fancy a CBR600.  Ive ridden a 2002 F-Sport and I found it to be good but uninspiring.  It does everything you want.....but doesn't give me the reckless screaming cackle that the ZXR did.

Ive been looking at 96-99 GSXR 750s.

Burger reckons a 600 is enough, but im not sure...

...and I really can only stretch to 2 G for the RIGHT bike.  I would prefer to spend 1800 and leave myself a bit for anything that might need replacing etc.

Thanks for the replies '<img'>

I was until I had to spend a small fortune on some downpipes, a back tyre and major service. (£800 in total)

Still it runs like new now and will certainly see me through the summer.

Was offered £1800 p/x against a brand new CBR6. Nearly signed but lucky enough I checked what my insurance would be. Now there's another story....

If I had £1800 to spend on a bike I'd be looking at a CBR600 or any 600. '<img'>

I'd say a 600 also. unlike everyone else I'm not going to be biast. Get a test ride on the 4 japanese manufacturers, and buy the one you get on most with.
If you find any spelling mistakes, you can keep them.

Can I just ask why some of you have recommended a 600 over a 750?

Will I not be dissapointed after riding a 750?

Will a 600 be able to 'keep up' with the pack?

What about mid nineties blades etc?

sold mine for £2.5k with low miles and a full Yoshi system last year....I'm guessing a private sale one would be around £2k by now....

It sounds to me mate like we are all a bit biased, got to love what you got init. '<img'>

I think Saints advice was best, test ride all of them and see what one you feel most comfortable on. Sounds like fun to me.   ':p'

Good luck.

Will I not be dissapointed after riding a 750?

A guy at work has had a VFR750, VTR1000 and a late nineties blade, last September he went test riding loads of new bikes, he setted on a CBR600RR, he reckons it does everything the bigger bikes do, but is so much more manouverable.
The way the manufacturers are moving things on, I reckon a 99/2000 600 will be as good if not better than a 92 750, as good as that was....  but that's only my opinion, try them out for yourself as Saint and Lee said and hopefully you'll find something you like.   '<img'>

I think you'll be hard pushed to find a good 750 that hasn't been tracked for 2 grand tho...

I'd for that sort of money you're gonna be looking at a circa 2000 600cc. I've got a '00 ninja and Becca, my gf has a '00 gixxer and both are fine bikes. TBH, unless you really like straight line speed and motorway riding you won't be too disappointed. Plus cheaper insurance means you can afford more petrol and tyres. For a 750 you'll be looking at SRAD's, and whilst they have the slightly bigger engine, it's even older and more likely to have things that need replacing, ditto with the old blades, they'll need a bit of restoration work and £2000 aint gonna be enough. IMO unless you really like older gixxers and are quite handy with the spanners, or you can find more money under your mattress, go for a sporty 6 around 1999-2000. CBR, ZX6R, GSXR, R6.......
is that thunder i can hear?

Well, thanks for all your advice.

I think my size also might suit a 600 a bit better than a 750, and the comments on the age factor of the bike needing a bit of work and replacement parts etc certainly would seem to be good advice.

Im not adverse to wielding the odd spanner etc, but if I wanted to be spending a lot of time doing major mechanics I would have set the time aside to complete my old 750.  Dont get me wrong, I love working on bikes, but I dont have the time to rebuild a bike, maintenance and upgrades are not a problem though.  I want a bike that is ready to ride, so to speak.

Thanks for all the advice and comments.  I'll start looking at the 600s, and hopefully I'll be seeing some of you again at Boxhill in the not too distant future '<img'>

Here are a couple that could be worth a look. IMO, for the money you want to spend you will get a good 600 over an OK 750. Also, if you are not able to keep up on a 600 (Evel Kev, Burger, Pieman, Becks, etc found it easy) then a 750 will not help.

Both Saint and I have spent time on an SV and a Firestorm. IMO the SVthou and Firestorm are great all round bikes but for under 2K its going to be a $hit bike when put up against a 600 that you can get. Also, the insurance will be a load more.

But your choice  '<img'>

TLR: Starting to be a collectors bike so £2K could be high miles, small problems, many owners, etc.
ZX7R: Like the bike '<img'> You'll need to ask Snap about parts as you don't want a bike like my TRX850 where there are no bloody parts about '<img'>
600's: If I did not have a love for twins (sisters ':p' ) then I'd be on one. Great for insurance and I love the sound of a motor screaming '<img'>
