When it's too good to be true...
« on: 15, January, 2007, 08:01:50 PM »
I have been ebaying since 2000 and have had 100% feedback until now.

Just before Christmas my mp3 player died, and I bought a replacement on ebay. Little did I know that I have bought it from a scammer, who "hacks" the players so the player thinks it has a larger capacity than it actually does. Not only that, even your PC would think that the mp3 player has the capacity that it's spec'd at. You'll only find out the player "malfunctions" when you store files in it beyond it's actual capacity. When that happens, the "hacked" player will reboot by itself, and files become unreadable or corrupted.

I became aware of the scam very soon after I made the purchase and as soon as my fears were confirmed I started a Dispute via Pay Pal. After a few exchanges, I managed to get a partial refund from the seller. But as a last attempt to take a swat at me for getting a refund, the seller has left me negative feedback.

So I guess the moral of the story is that, when it is too good to be true, it probably is. You can find an entire forum of people who have fallen victim to these scammers, and more importantly a very long list of the scamming-sellers here:
