Westminster to charge for m/c parking in london
« on: 17, December, 2006, 07:46:44 PM »
Just wanted to let everyone know about this important issue. It was  mentioned on the front page of MCN a few weeks ago.

Basically, Westminster City Council have future plans to charge motorcyclists to park in standard m/c bays in London.  '<img'>

Before you say I don't live/commute in London - read on

Originally, the plan was to also provide additional security devices (like chainable rails) but this has now been dismissed.

The plan has implications for ALL bikers nationwide. If this goes ahead in London then it's likely that other councils nationwide will follow.

To find out more and to sign a Petition have a look at this website which is totally dedicated to the issue:

http://www.free4bikers.org.uk

If bikers ignore this issue then in a year's time we'll all be paying loads more every year with NO benefit.

MAG are onto this issue as well so ask at your local meet if you are a member.

So sign that Petition and voice your opinion - this affects everyone !

Cheers    '<img'>

Duly signed, wouldn't be so bad if they did charge if there we're actually enough places for bikes, or if they provided something to lock your bike to !

there's only 6 signatures (including mine) on the petition so far, i think this is one of the few issues that really needs all bikers forums involved, and most probably a protest ride will be needed.  next thing we know we'll pay congestion charges  '<img'>

I was thinking that all these issues of there not being enough motorcycle parking as it is, let alone being charged for it, not being able to use bus lanes, the roads being downright lethal in places (holes, overbanding, gravel, diesel, etc) and probably quite a few more other issues that users of two wheels in London have might be something that demands some sort of demonstration or protest ride or something...

From the views I've had from fellow bikers, a protest ride is certainly something that springs to mind on this parking issue. Maybe something on the lines of the KillSpills rally.

I know the London Branch of MAG had a meeting about this last week but I'm not sure what the outcome was.

Once a few people hear about this then a protest ride is certainly something to think about.

I'm sure Westminster City Council would wake up and notice if a few hundred (or more) bikes went past their front door.

If we don't do something then it WILL be implemented so it needs thinking about carefully.

Cheers  '<img'>

Yes thats the one in Kensington & Chelsea, where they are going to converts m/c bays to residents parking and charge em £50 for a permit.  '<img'>

There will be no where for visiting bikers to park. Apparently the cutoff date for voicing opinions on that issue is 5th Jan - so tell Kensigton & Chelsea Council quick if it affect you !

Apart from the cost it will create chaos for every motorcyclist who bikes from one borough to another - each will have different set of rules and different charging systems.

It could be that we arrange a mass ride on K&C first. Then maybe Westminster will wake up as well  ''

lol lets all begin a protest ride everyone, with some ammunition of loads of written signatures im sure that will work better only problem is that it would have to be on a week day to draw more attention!!!!!

You know I was starting to think the same thing.

Councils don't work at weekends, well not the big bosses - could be a long lunch hour event !

Accountability

Wouldn't it be better to personalize a protest.  Find out firstly what department and then what committee made this decision. Then approach the person who proposed this idea making them accountable and force them to justify before we take our protest on to the streets (and pissin off the non-biking community).

I bet we have a biker somewhere inside the council.

Well basically its the "Parking" dept but the issue went before the actual councillors at Westminster City Council. They approved it and it was passed.

However that only gives them the green light to proceed and make detailed plans. If bikers moan and groan NOW it will make them think again.

I know it's a bit boring but to see the actual issue have a look on the link below:

We need to know who in the parking dept! We cannot deal with faceless beaurocrats they will simply hide behind their departmental barrier. I bet you that some poor pratt has been told to increase parking revenue and this was the first thing that came to mind. We need someone inside the council who understands the infrastructure!

Done.
More blatant milking of the cash cow motorist and totally out of order.  By the way the bay capacity in Westminster is completely inadequate, to the point where when you have circled around looking for non existant spaces and eventally leave your bike on a pavement (tucked in safely and right out of the way) they ticket you and say you are causing an obstruction.  The sandwich boards on the Aldwych that sit right in the middle of the pavement apparently do not.  Hmmmm.
I agree with Steve, if we could find out the individuals actual names and place where these chinless wonders work we could target any protest more effectively.  Ideas??
