bike thefts are getting more and more common lately
whatever you seem to do they still manage to take them and the police dont seem to be in the least bit interested insurance companys aint to bothered because they get it back in putting the cost up
so what can we do?
the joy riding of bikes has been going on a long time but with the advent of ebay its now big money to break and sell bikes. Perhaps the manufactors should be made to drop the price of spares typical example a 9 grand bike bought as spares will cost you 45 grand if second hand parts didnt fetch so much money it wouldnt be so lucrative for the thieves
its now geting beyond the joke that we get targeted for small plates loud pipes speeding and every other anti bike excuse they can sling at us but cant be arsed to do something about the lowlifes that steal ya pride and joy
perhaps it would be a good idea if someone set up a web site for stolen bikes if they havnt already with reg nos and datatool nos on and the manufactorers giving a replacement part for people that find they have bought a stolen part that leads to a conviction perhaps that will stop the sale of them on ebay and such
we all like cheap parts and will buy them off ebay and breakers but if we find out it might have been stolen would we say anything for fear of losing it or getting nicked ourselfs
if we was Guaranteed that we wouldnt and that the seller was found and prosicuted and we got a part to replace that perhaps it would cut some of the crime down
biking comunity is a small world when you think most on here will know other groups and other bikes that they see up box hill chelsea bridge and other biker places there must be some way of policeing it ourselfs to some extent
what are other peoples views and ideas on this ?
and is there anything we can do as a group ?
we are quite a resourceful site as the unity ride proved
anyway i will stop rambling on lets see if we can come up with some sort of solution

OK.
It's gonna be called Bike Line and it works like this.
All bikers register with a picture of their P & G and all the information about the bike. This is then placed on a server waiting to be activated.
Then when a registered members bike is nicked a photograph is automatically sent to the mobile phones of all members together with relevent information. 10,000 eyes are better than none!
Then if the bike is seen, you return the message to say where or inform the police immediately. Those that dont have multimedia mobile phones can get just a description and a Reg. No or can go to a website.
A website can also help pinpoint areas that will need additional police resources.
This project is going to need funding big-time but with Plod, BMF, MAG, the motorcycle industry and insurance companies we can make this work.
I'll talk to PFM......He's gonna fuggin luv me turning up on his doorstep yet again!

We can do this but not just yet I'll really busy at the moment and we still haven't finished the Unity DVD. I'm only a bloke I can't multitask!

Great, one less job for us!
I also think that it would be nice to be able to print out an A4 sheet with 10 or so pictures of missing bikes on and then stick it on the tank.
The MCN site still needs to be updated using modern tech, as suggested above, but that requires money, as I stated, and MCN are in the money making business above all.
Someone needs to spread the word coz it's the first time I've heard of it.

do they do a tracker for bikes? like they do cars this would be a good option cos as soon as they took it the police can track the bike to a garage or wherever they take it

i have read the mcn bike watch and its ok but do you want ya bike back in bits months after the insurance has paid out
i think stems idea is good one cos if we can catch the thieves with the bike A you have a better chance of it being in one piece B the crims get caught C. if they know every biker is looking at the bike they are less likely to take it
that just leaves the van thieves that load it into a van then all the bits end up on ebay and other sales which is what i was saying about in the first post we need to strangle the traffic of stolen parts

All i ment was to point out what had already been done, as indicated its not using the latest MMS tech, we can do better.

We've had the tracker discussion before. You can fit them to bikes, but they're not cheap. Worth it if you're buying something really expensive though.
There's also a new type out. We've bought one and are testing it at the moment, we've had a few problems with it. Sometimes the software seems to go tits-up and it says the thing hasn't moved when we know it has. Still experimenting with it really.
We fit them to cars all the time, and they're bloody good, not only will they tell you which street it's parked on, they can narrow it down to one side of the road or the other, and pinpoint it to within a few yards.

Last night, while tossing & turning unable to sleep due to thinking about how to spend my lottery win, I thought 'why not the police set up a sting operation, park a nice new bike somewhere, wait for one of the transit gangs to nick it and then follow them back to their lair'...well i open today's MCN and that was exactly what the city of London police did. Well done to them, but apparently the Met are not so proactive so it said in the article. I hope they are lulling the thieves into a false sense of insecurity and are planning a similar sting

They do need to be more pro active about this. If they can be seen to be doing something, it won't look like such an easy option to work shy tossers

The bike sting operations have been going on for the last 3 years at least. If you visit the Police stands at the bike shows you will see the sting bikes there. The operations fall just short of entrapment to be a legal way of nabbing known bike theft gangs. An operation such as this was used in the Hampshire area to halt a major criminal ring that had stolen hundreds of bikes which were disposed of through various methods including amending and selling through dealers, breaking for parts and shipping abroad.

Oh oh i have an idea. Anyone that steals a bike and is caught should have their legs chopped off with a samari sword to ensure they don't put any others bikers through the misery that i'm going through now.

Aye (but that wasn't very diplomatic Ange)
The way this thread has gone so quickly is really encouraging, I think we have the people here to make a difference.
What criteria will be needed for insurance company's and manufactorers to come onside and back colin's replace stolen parts idea?

And as you and Daz (Trouty) know, the sword that I have is extreeeemly sharp.
Security? My toy has the best chains in the country on it - Almax chains. One chain goes through the ground anchore, the swingarm and rear wheel, and the other goes aroung the seat and attaches to the other chain with a massive Squire padlock. And then I squeeze the car in the garage next to it as well.
Having spoken with Maxine of Almax chains this week, I understand that there is going to be an article in Rog's mag, The Riders Digest about their chains. Check out

We at Almax will be at the International Motorcycle & Scooter Show at the NEC Birmingham Stand R32. Come and see the top chains bolt cropped.
We have bolt cropped numerous chains with the Irwin Record 42" Bolt croppers. Riders Digest will be doing the same next week.
We are launching the Almax Immobiliser series III, it cannot be bolt cropped with the Record 42" Croppers. All the other manufacturers say that their chains are bolt crop resistant.
Would you chose water resistant clothing, or water proof clothing?? Coz Irwin Record 42" bolt croppers are a down pour for a security chain!!!! Would your chain stand up???

i know there have been a few thefts recently of members bikes. it would be good to know what security devices they were using, so that the rest of us do not buy the same, or if we have the same, to upgrade.
let's say someone had 100 quid to spend on chains & locks, would it make more sense to buy one top quality chain or say 2 cheaper ones, would a bike with more chains and locks on look less appealing to the casual theif than one with just one on.
