Veggie oil help wanted
« on: 06, December, 2006, 09:47:25 PM »
ive been experimenting with veggi oil in my diesel landrover 300tdi, i whacked a load in last night estimating a 60%diesel mix 40% oil the truck tan fine last night and this morning but i did notice that it was laboring a bit at tickover (lower revs)
i would dilute but the damned thing is just about full and you guessed it, it failed to start this evening, even after using the heater plugs half a dozen times..can anyone offer any help? will it go with a tow rope?

15 - 20% max i think Lee. Not sure if it will tow though. Is it proper refined veggie oil?.

Too much of it thickens in the cold, try a night heater under the engine.
I know a courier who uses this stuff, very well educated at it as well.
If you need any help i will sort his number out for you, i think he would be happy to help.
2.3ltr triples are mad, old men on 2.3ltr triples are madder.

do you want  to mess your engine up why dont you make bio diesel its 100% legal and cleaner and safer for your engine and you can make it purely from vegetable oil you can make 200 litres a day no problem in your shed

my old military land rover had drain plugs in the bottom of each fuel tank, you might have them on yours.

oh bollocks!
have spoken to a mate up north who recons it will start from a tow. im not going back up north till thursday, thats a 250 mile journey whereupon i can fill up with regular diesel close to home.
ive got a straight bar and a proper tow strap in the truck...... i just need a volunteer with a big enough car to pull it now!

my truck is parked up near about 3 minutes from vauxhall, close to wandsworth road, the drain plug makes sense but temember there is close to 120 litres of fuel in there, a milk bottle might not suffice '<img'>
would like to have a go with a tow rope if anyone can help me out, this truck has never ever let me down before if it does go with a tow itll allow me to rest a bit easier knowing that it will get me home, i can meet up just about anytime...on any day
volunteers?

OK, can't resist this anymore, the boy scout in me has come to the fore and I can't stand by and see a fellow biker, let alone a fellow TLBer in distress '<img'>

I have a Mitsubishi L200 which should do the job of towing, I'm near Bromley (southeast) so can get up there tomorrow evening and we'll give it a go !

but we need a plan B if that doesn't work...

Plastic bins are 80 litres capacity, reckon we can fill it to 60 litres and still lift it into the back of a truck (or leave them by the side of the road if not...), so we need a couple of plastic bins and some gaffer tape to seal them and stop it spilling everywhere.

What is the clearance under your landy, do you reckon we can get a regular bucket underneath ? a couple of buckets and we can drain it and fill the bins but we'll need some regular diesel to refill and get it going.

I can bring some suitable jump leads if it needs some time turning over to get the proper diesel in the engine.

PM me your mobile number and we'll talk tomorrow morning and arrange a time '<img'>

I don't have a tow bar fitted but I have a heavy duty tow rope with shackles on it so we can probably improvise wrapping it round the chassis of my truck at the back, or something, it'll be fine, probably...  '<img'>

you sir, will go to heaven!
thing is, it DID go on the stuff, it even started last time from cold. i recon the mixture is about 60% diesel and 40% oil, i dont suppose you have a voltage inverter and a hairdryer/electric paintstripping heatgun do you?
I dont really want to tip all the fuel out (mainly cos its going to be a right arse on) itll need to be started twice, once so i know its going to go again and once next thursday when i drive it back up to teesside.
have pmed you my number

just had some advice from another forum (fromanother landy owner) suggested warming the pump with a heat gun, also changing the fuel filter and filling it with regular diesel, priming and cranking

gonna buy me a gas blow torch in the morning and try to warm the injector pump up with it (without setting the truck on fire) this should thin the oil down enough for it to fire...allegedly ''
will let you know how i get on. what a friggin arse on. last time i listen to advisors..."yeah just whack it in mate, she'll run sweet as a nut"
.

ok, ive done some more thinking.
heres the plan.
tomorrw i will buy
a gas blow lamp
a bottle of redex injector cleaner
3 litres of regular diesel

the execution.

1.remove the fuel filter and tip out its contents
2.pour in half a bottle of injection cleaner and top up with fresh diesel
3 refit the filled fuel filter and prime it
4. boil a full kettle of water and slowly pour it over the injection pump
5. finish off warming the pump and hoses carefully with the blow lamp
6. start the engine.

if it starts, run it for couple of minutes till im happy.

7. switch off the engine and remove the fuel filter again
8. tip out its contents
9.pour in the second half of the injection cleaner and top up with fresh diesel.
10. refit the fuel filter and prime.

11. lock up and leave the vehicle
12 return in 6 days at the end of my shift armed with a fully boiled kettle and a blow lamp
13.start the truck and bugger off back north.
14 stop after 240 miles and refuel with diesel
15 drive the remaining 10 miles home (filling and flushing the system with proper fuel)
16 learn my lesson and never do it again!

if i get to stage 6 and it fails to start, ill give john a bell and discuss an alternative plan
i recon itll go though
 '<img'>
what do you think john??

sorry, missed your call but got your text mate, I won't call you now and wake you up !

earliest I can get up this evening will be around 8pm unfortuantely I'll be tied up sat/sun, give me a call when you've had your kip '<img'>

Vegetable oil is far more viscous than diesel as it is, at lower temperatures it can only get thicker and I think that is the problem your having. As far as I can ascertain to run a diesel engine on a high proportion of, or totally on, straight vegetable oil requires a heater for the fuel tank.

I'm not convinced that towing will get it going, though I'm more than happy to give it a try, to be honest I think draining the tank is the quickest and easiest option that will guarantee getting your landy going and keeping it going, it needn't be a big hassle to do.

I'm still quite happy to come and give you a hand if you need it '<img'>

didnt go quite to plan this morn,
couldnt get hold of a blow torch so i boiled a kettle and slowly poured the hot water over the injector pump, swapped the fuel filter contents, cranked....
had a couple of goes without any luck, then the battery gave out.
got the blow torch this evening, will nip back later in the works van and try my slave (jump) leads, good job i bought a big set of "mans leads" recon im gonna need them!
