I agree with having Ad's on TV about road danger but I want balance and don't want my family sitting at home seeing this and thinking "will Matt make it home from work?" '<img'>

Yep, I agree, some sentistivity is needed.

When they produced those postcards that when you move them it changes from alive biker to dead, bloody biker my (now ex) partner used to shove it in my face saying 'that's how you'll end up' and various unpleasant things.

That's what it's all about is it? Who is to blame.

Both IMO.
1. Only a fool opens a car door without looking. But in saying that we must remember that kids are in cars and they will do this.
2.The bike should not be that close to cars when there is no other cars on the road. If there was other traffic on the road then he should still not be that close to cars anyway with common knowlege being that you can not check if someone is in the seat of each car. We should all know that you use as much of the road as you can to make you ride safe.
Hope you are making jokes and have a smile on your face my Danish diplomatic friend. Long may your memory live!

There are a lot of bikers who do not seem to know this. In watching this advert only someone who does, would probably spot that though.

Fruitskin, prob no mention of motorbikes because we are not the only thing car drivers don't look out for. Cyclists, pedestrians etc. are all frequently missed. Even sometimes double decker buses!

Riding just one foot further to the right and the rider is safe, looking into the car and noticing that there is a occupant and the rider is safe, 5mph slower and the biker is safe.
Listen, no one except bikers and there immediate family gives a 'flyin F&$K' if we are knocked off or not! The responsibility for our safety lays with us. Defend yourself at all times, the bastards really are out to kill us all.

Guess who's havin a bad day!

i do agree u should be careful and keep an eye out but at times u cant see people open their doors, i was filtering on the left of a left ahnd lane at one point (yes i know this is stupid) and had somebody open a car door onto my leg, hurt a bit but didnt know me off or anything but it was somet i cudnt have seen at all, ok i should have been where i was but people should always check their doors before they open them, i keep my doors on my car locked till people have checked its clear, only then can people get out and tbh most people never ever check no matter how old they are, ive had a mate sitting in the car for 5 minutes waiting for me to unlock the door before he checked, it didnt occur to him, they need an advert to say somet like check before opening doors, cos u cud even hit a pedestarian not just a bike, also u cud hit a car driving past and end up losing ur car door, the problem is people dont look, thats what they need to put across, ok yeah show the dangers of what happens when u dont look but they still need to make it pointful that u should always look

does anybody actually know what happens if you hit a car door at more than 10mph?  i witnessed a pushbike having the door opened in front of him.  the bike made a 360degrees jump, the door's window shuttered in thousands of pieces and hit me too, i was about 2 car's lenght away from it.  the door was bent outward and the guy inside didnt loose his arm for pure luck.  pushbike rider was lucky too, he got bits of glass inside his hands but nothing broken, considering that it was his right lane and the guy in the car parked there illegaly.
pushbikes weight about 30kg, with the rider on maybe 120kg (he was a big fella) and was travelling no more than 20mph...

they should make that ad part 2, what happens to the driver of the car when opens the door in front of you.
compare the meeerkat

I cycle 30 miles a day in london, and cyclists get the car door far more often than motorcyclists... and generally riding 6ft away from the parked cars isnt possible without being run over by a fourxfatal   '<img'>

One thing which I always do if someone opens their door in front of me (not so relevant for motorcyclists, but sometimes can be) - they'll usually be getting out the door as they open it. So aim at the person - they're much softer to hit than car doors. And it makes damn sure they dont do it again  ':crazy'

Personally I think it infers that because the guy was in a rush, he was careless, which is totally unfair, as these days everyone is in a hurry!
I agree it should be more balanced and it looks as if MCN is taking up the cudgels.

Not sure about rush, it is true that most accidents happen on familiar journeys, like on the way to or from home.

Mikey, as I'm sure you can guess I was not talking about Simon and have not dumped him. He does worry about me loads though since my accident, so I guess it makes no difference whether they are bikers or not, people who care about us will always worry. In fact if bikers they know only too well about the dangers out there.

No SB I was only kidding here. I think that they should target scooter riders too, who quite often ride without any protective gear..

I think the govt should be proactive rather than reactive - what I mean by that is to ensure that every person taking their car driving test is warned/trained how to look out for bikes, how to check their blind spot, and wing mirrors before turning/opening their door, and also other things which can be a danger, like people flicking their fag ends out their car windows without checking to see whether its gonna land in a bikers crotch......

I know from when I took my test (albeit 10 yrs ago) that not one word was said to me about awareness of motorbikes. The focus is on looking out for cyclists and pedestrians.

I agree that the adverts are a good idea in theory, and it makes me "think", but thats because I am a biker and the issue is important to me. I know plenty of car drivers who this had no effect on whatsoever because they have never been 'taught' how to look out for bikes.

and who will also see the adverts and interpret the events as being the biker's fault for reasons such as:

going too fast
not watching where he/she's going
etc..
