Advise about new bike
« on: 20, July, 2006, 11:41:54 AM »
Hey guys,

I am on the market for a new (used) bike to replace my XT once i pass my DAS...

I saw a Triumph Tripple Speed for sale with 18000 miles and it has a single headlight but i cant find any information about them on the net. All the Triple Speed i have seen have 2 lights.

Is 18000 miles to much for a bike? (Price is 2000 pounds)
Are Triumphs any good?

I still havent passed or booked in for my DAS but i can buy it and put it on the garage until i get my DAS but i am concerned with the miles and maybe the power of that bike '<img'>

Any suggestions are more than welcome...

Ok i make it easier for everybody... I wont go for it after all .. I looked around and i can find bikes with much better milage and nicer bikes for the same price... A suzuki Bandit might be my next target and i might go and have a look at it on SUnday...

I would urge you to consider a H0nda CB600F Hornet, there are plenty around within your budget so finding a good one should be straightforward, they're stylish, well made, they go/stop/handle well and they are reliable '<img'>

Check out Biketrader

One other thing, get someone who knows what there doing to check the bike out with you before you part with your money !

Cheers John...

All those h**da, Suzuki and Kawasaki 500 - 600 range look about the same so any i find cheap i will go for it.

I had a look at the Hornets and they are 3500+ for a 2 years old a bit expensive... I can buy a new Suzuki 500cc for that money.

I have a h**da car and it is great but from what i have gathered here bikes are not so good or i might be mistaken..

Ok time to book DAS ..  ':upside'

There are a wealth of differences between bikes in that range, some subtle and some not so, most of the 500's are twins and most of the 600's are fours for instance (and then there is the odd single and v-twin), some will rot before your eyes and others will go through winter without a problem, some handle well and some don't, etc, etc.

I wouldn't just go for the cheapest 500 or 600 you can find regardless of model or make, you'll end up disappointed.

Anyway I don't know where you get the idea that h**da don't make good bikes... ''

oh, another good bike to consider is the Suzuki SV650 '<img'>

A 3 years old Hornet is around 2600+ and they are the most good looking , together with the bandit

SV 650 not something i like  ':p'  I prefer naked bikes...

Thanks JT..

So i will look for a Hornet or a Bandit...

Trying to find a school to book DAS.. .A 2 day course plus 3rd day for exam should be fine ?! I ride everyday for the past 4 months on the XT and clocked 1100 miles :P .. .Too early?

Bandits & Hornets are like Speed Camera's! they are everywhere.

You have to ask yourself why? It's because they are proven, well made and they hold their residual value above others.

If i was in the market for another bike of this size (and i might be now there is a space in my garage) either of them would me my choice.

I agree, you can't go wrong with a Hornet or a Bandit (or an SV650 imo) unless you buy a lemon, which is unfortunately quite easy to do if your a novice.

Said it already but I'll say it again because it is so very important, take someone who knows about bikes along with you before you part with your cash ! '<img'>

XT, just remember that they are a twin and for some people the sound after a couple of hundred miles will do your head in unless you like that sound '<img'> . Also there is a flood of SV's in the country and they have not taken off that well IMO (have a look at www.sv650.org for what sort of extras you can get for low £'s)

If I was you and liked the naked bikes I'd go look at some bandits. Great motor, loads of parts around and I think if you look at the insurance they are very good there also.

The GS500 is a great bike IMO for 2 up riding and learning on. The bike set up out handles the motor and IMO this is what you want.

But it is up to you and what ever you get PLEASE remeber what John has posted a couple of times about having another person to look before handing over the cash '<img'>
Hope you are making jokes and have a smile on your face my Danish diplomatic friend. Long may your memory live!

'twin' refers to having two cylinders whereas SOHC is an abbreviation of 'Single Overhead Camshaft' which is an internal part of the engine that you probably don't need to worry about at this stage '<img'>

I think your best bet will be to pass your test then, armed with your full licence, try and find some dealers that have suitable examples of bikes your interested in and try and get yourself a test ride (and not just a run round the block either) this may not be easy with a brand new licence and they may want a full price cash deposit but you really owe it to yourself to try before you buy, it'll be a bit of a hassle but you won't regret it '<img'>

Okay will do. I contacted OMD with any course details.

There is a good hire place where i live that have few nice bikes so once i have DAS i might hire some bikes for a weekend and see which one i like more.

Sorry i got confused with DOHC and SOHC that i was a bit suprised that a 500cc will be a SOHC..

A twin will be like an old beetle if i am not mistaken.

The bike I bought after passing my test is the H0nda CBR600F-X. Had it a couple of years now. Great fun and very reliable. Lives outside on the road, under a cover, and still looks in excellent condition. Never had problem with it. Go for the H0nda. They are built to last. Personally would go for the CBR instead of the Hornet, purely on the basis of the CBR having the fairing. You can pick up a 2000/01 for c.£3k.

Anyway, good luck with the DAS test and watch the u-turn!

The u-turn is the thing that most people fail on as they put their foot down mid way through. I didn't and managed to pass first time.

As a tip...look where you what to go, use the rear brake, 2nd gear and a bit of power, feathering the clutch. You should be ok then.
