How did u get into biking?
« on: 13, July, 2006, 08:11:25 AM »
Just wondering....how did u all get into biking?

The earliest memory of wanting a bike for me was when I was about 6 and was going on a family holiday. I was stuck in the backseat of dum&mads car and remember seeing loads of bikes go past one after the other. I remember the noise they made and the whoosh of air as they flew by and since then I wanted one!!! ':lurve:'

Then me two bro's got bikes and I used to go pillion on the youngest ones bike and loved it!!!

Tams x

bikes have been in the family as long as i can recall... my nan was known for always being in the chair on a sidecar outfit, my dad and uncles always had bikes. i think i first 'rode' a bike at about the age of 6 or 7 (rode, as in dad on the back, me on front, i had the controls but dad had hands on the bars ready to take over) on a h**da cd175 over the woods '<img'>

I went out with a gorgeous bloke from Wolverhampton in my final year at Uni who had a Beemer K75 and I learnt to ride in an attempt to impress him. It didn't - he dumped me, to my eternal regret... however the love of biking is still going strong ':p'

My old man had an AJS, and a couple of Triumphs so grew up around them, used to ride an old scooter around a pretty far flung island when I was 12 or so..

always had one.... or three

I didn't know any bikers at all, had never been pillion or anything - just thought - "sod this for a game of soldiers" when I tried to get around London on Public Transport, acquired a seized RD200 way back even before the 125 rule came in, attempted to fix it, failed, aqcuired a burnt-out CM125 for £25 and actually managed to fix that one, fell off it, got back on. The rest is history.

my dad used to take me for long rides when i was about 11 or 12, because i was the only one in my family who wasnt scared of the speed...helmets werent compulsory at the time, i remember hugging my dad from the pillion seat fliyin 120mph...and he still has the same bike.  everytime somebody had a new bike they'll take me as pillion as i wont mind them going fast.   i guess its always been in me, even i started riding fairly late

Wanted one since I was 14, as soon as I started work looked for an Ariel Arrow, like hens teeth, so settled for a Leader which I hated, then was converted to Triumphs for donkeys years, now blissfully happy with my Yam '<img'>
My poor Mother had three of us whizzing around on bikes as my two brothers followed suit and being the sensible eldest was forever collecting them and bits of bike after they had come off.
Even collected one of them from hospital on the bike after he had broken his collar bone playing rugby at school, don't think he has ever forgiven me..ouch ':p'

My dad bought me a C70 when I was about 12. He was a school caretaker at the time, so I used to ride it around the playground!!

My dad's been on and off of bikes for years, so it was bound to happen really.

I Went from C70 to C90, to DT50, to DT125, To CB125, To h**da Revere, To h**da Transalp, to Yamaha FZR750R, To EN500 (Yuk), to GSX600F, to Thundercat, to Thunderace, to Fazer, to ZX9R, and finally to my current babies - GSXR 600 K4 & RGV250 & CR250

Well always wanted a scooter as my best mates family all ride them so on my 16th birthday I bought brand new Piaggio NRG (2002),

Bought 2 Aprilia RS125's between the age of 17 & 18.

Passed my driving test when I was 17, bought a car, never rode in wet weather again!

Then turned 19, bought my srad, used it on track days with work, and decided I wanted to go on the road, so passed my test 3 months ago....now have the very well known K4 Rizla

Nobody in my family rides bikes or ever has done!

well now my dad has a 125 scooter!  '<img'>

my whole family (apart from my brother) have always been anti-bikes - so when i talked about it, it was always met with disapproval! When I was at school, one of my mates had just been bought a h**da MT-5 for his 16th birthday, and he let me have a ride on it - as soon as I was 16, i got one myself!! - Loved it. Graduated to a 125 as soon as possible, then went over to the dark side of 4 wheels for a few years.

Then I had a choice - deposit on a house, or a bike. I made the sensible choice and got a bike!!  ':devil'

Since then, I think i may have started to sway 2 of my sisters on to 2 wheels - both love going on the back - and even my parents appreciate them now!

Dad had bikes for a long as I can remember and I wanted one from the age of 6 or 8 while at the earld Court Bike Show, where I met Barry Sheene. M&D said no to bikes though dad was an an instructor and would take me out on the CX500. Borrowed friends bikes for some off road fun in my teens then tried a CX500 on a gravel track, apparently I had a talent as the owner was amazed I didn't drop it the way I was sliding it about. Big gap then took test at 32 and only look back to see who is keeping up. Bought a CBR600FY days after passing test, rode it for 2 1/2 years then moved on the Pans as I need a bike that fits me. Well over 100,000 mls later and I get a smile every day I'm riding. Met some luverly people who will remain friends forever.

Spotty yoof needed to get to college  '<img'>

DT50 on my sixteenth birthday (sadly not FOR my 16th birthday), knackered GP100 to pass the part I and II (showing my age), inevitable self-destructing YPVS350, then a CBR6 FH (the jelly mould type) which got, um, 'broken', then a newer CBR6, then a KLX650 when the CBR6 broke down after a 100,000 miles (yes, you can even kill a h**da), then back on the CBR6 after much repair work, then a ZX9 (which really ought to be replaced soon) and a KMX200 for going to work  '<img'>

About a quarter of a million miles so far I reckon.

What a fantastic topic.  Well done Tams.  Anyway loved bikes as a kid i had one of those evil Kinevils thingys you wind up. (dont know where it is now) think i broke it.  My first bike was a Yamaha FSIE 50 in Blue.  My dad paid £50 for it off a mate at school at the time and i was 15 just coming up to 16.  Best gift i ever had and i went everywhere on it.  Got a 60 kit for it and Micron and met all my biker mates outside the Wimpy every now and then.  I remember there must of been 20 of us buzzing round the town annoying people, it was great.  Since then i saw the Rd125 the Gammas and been hooked ever since although i did have a break from bikes when i was 21 for 9 years.  Excellent topic!!!!!!

My brother had a little h**da something and took me pillion a few times - I think he tried to scare me but it didnt work!!!!  Met a guy with an old Velocette cafe racer and I was hooked!  First hubby customised a Matchless 350 for me to ride about on but somehow became responsible when i had kids so stopped riding!!  Have only been back on the biking scene for the last two years (thanks to Westie) and feel i have wasted so much time!!!!

After a pillion ride on a friends bike about 12 years ago, I was just instantly hooked, it was just a matter of months later that i passed my bike test, started on a 125 and worked my way up, when i bought my first 600 I sold my car because i knew i never wanted to drive again, never had a car since. 3 years into riding I was told by my gran that my grandad rode a bike his whole life, (so it must be in the blood) he was 6' 7" and rode a bsa bantam.
LIFE is so good at times

I remember my dad having a motorbike in the garden when i was about 6.  I used to sit on it and pretend i was riding it.  I remember how chunky and heavy it was, nothing like they are now but i cant remember what it was.  I think it was an Enfield something ill have to find out.
